It was forged by Weyland the Smith and originally belonged to his father, Sigmund, who received it in the hall of the Volsung after pulling it out of the tree Barnstokk into which Odin had stuck it-nobody else could pull it out. In Norse mythology, Gram (Old Norse "wrath") is the name of the sword that Sigurd (Siegfried) used to kill the dragon Fafnir. And only a man called Sigmund could pull it out. Geoffrey says the sword was forged in Avalon and Latinizes the name "Caledfwlch" to Caliburn or Caliburnus."Įxcalibur could also be derived from Gram which is a sword known to be embedded into a tree, called Barnstokk, by the norse god Odin. "Geoffrey of Monmouth's History of the Kings of Britain is the first non-Welsh source to speak of the sword. And they're both keys to Avalon and Helheim and they both shoot out some sort of lightning/energy.

created by the same dwarf maybe? They both have similar backgrounds there. I'm just debating now whether or not mjolnir and excalibur are related artifacts  I mean. Probably someone found the sword, pulled it out, conquered a large area, then spun the story of heroism prior to death and broke up the sword for some reason. That's a pretty good explanation, though I wonder when Natla entered into Amanda's life? Also, going with this explanation the whole story of King Arthur could very be extemely inaccurate. So, by calling Helheim 'Avalon' and making getting into the place appealing to Amanda, Natla got herself a puppet to do her dirty work for her (having not learned her lesson in TR1 when doing the same to Lara backfired spectacularly!).

Now, had Natla actually told Amanda what was inside Helheim and what it's purpose was, AManda probably wouldn't have helped her. The game guide for Underworld expands on this and says that Amanda is a scholar of the mystic arts and believes that visiting Avalon would grant her knowledge of ancient mysticism. In Underworld, it is revealed that Natla has fed the information regarding 'Avalon' to Amanda - since Natla wants to get there to activate the device. Now, during the events of Legend, we hear about Helheim from Amanda, but under the name 'Avalon', and we find out that this is where Amelia has gone. In Legend, we see that Amelia is transported to Helheim using the travel network of daises and Excalibur as a 'key'. Right - Helheim is the place you visit at the end of Underworld, where the big device to unleash Ragnarok is housed.

I heared they were the same place and Excilubar i know its a sword but what about it? As much as i love Tomb Raider it confuses the hell out of me.
